A Gift for the Heart PDF Print E-mail

For those who are looking for a meaningful gift for friends and family, the Piedmont Heart Institute offers a gift for the heart. The CT coronary calcium scan is a quick and painless method for the detection and risk assessment of coronary artery disease. For $125, your loved one will receive a CT scan of his/her heart with Piedmont’s Aquilion® ONE Dynamic Volume CT Scanner, the first CT scanner of its kind in Georgia; a reading; and an evaluation of the images by a cardiologist. A generated report of the findings can then be sent to the patient’s personal physician.

According to statistics from the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, 50 percent of men and 64 percent of women who died suddenly from coronary heart disease had no previous symptoms of the disease.  While many people think they would know if they were at risk, it’s best to be checked so you can enjoy time together with loved ones for years to come.

CT coronary calcium scan for $125

Those who have a family history of heart disease, diabetes or renal disease but have not experienced symptoms are best candidates for this screening. Because this screening is best used to identify heart disease before the patient has known symptoms, it is not recommended for those who have coronary artery stents in place or who have had cardiac bypass surgery. Those who are or might be pregnant are not candidates for CT coronary calcium scans.

More information about the CT coronary calcium scan

The CT coronary calcium scan is a non-invasive way of obtaining information about the presence, location and extent of calcified plaque in the coronary arteries, which is a sign of coronary artery disease. Because calcium is a marker of disease, the findings are given a calcium score, and the amount of calcium detected is a very helpful predictive tool.

Procedure Overview

    • Upon arrival to the department, one of our department personnel will ask some basic health questions regarding health and family health history. The questions will include information such as possible pregnancy, which would preclude you from having the procedure done.
    • The patient will be asked to change into a gown.
    • Upon entering the scan room, the patient will be asked to lie on the scanning table and to place their arms comfortably above their head.
    • The technologist will place three electrocardiograph (ECG) patches on the chest, then attach electrodes to the patches. These electrodes are used to monitor the heart rate during the procedure.
    • The technologist will properly align the patient for the procedure, and then move the table into the gantry to prepare for the first scan.
    • The patient will be given breathing instructions for the scans.
    • Once the table is in position, the entire procedure will take approximately 5 minutes.
