Cardiovascular disease is the leading killer of men and women in the United States. The Piedmont Heart Institute aims to reduce incidence rates by conducting and participating in research studies that will impact these statistics.  Since the mid-1960's, Piedmont has continued to earn recognition as a leader in the prevention and treatment of heart disease.

The Piedmont Hospital Research Institute reflects Piedmont’s mission to provide patient access to the most advanced clinical practices and technologies. The Institute’s innovative, multidisciplinary approach results in new treatments, therapies and technologies that provide patients with the most effective care possible.

Current cardiovascular research activities include:

  • New treatments for arrhythmia disorders, including cardiac resynchronization for chronic heart failure, ablation for complex arrhythmias and post heart attack pacing for prevention of cardiac remodeling.
  • One of the nation’s highest accruing peripheral vascular research programs, offering studies focusing on angioplasty, stent placement, atherectomy, risk assessment, noninvasive therapies and advanced imaging procedures.
  • Cardiac imaging research program that explores the safety and efficacy of new diagnostic techniques.
  • Genomics blood bank which has created a clinical repository to investigate the interaction of multiple phenotypes and genotypes and their impact on cardiovascular disease events.
